Teach to Lead Conference

To further the national work, the Collective submitted a proposal to participate in the US Department of Education’s December 2016 Teach to Lead Summit on Inclusion, Equity, and Opportunity. The Collective’s proposal was accepted and a team from Oakland, Chicago, and Peoria attended the two-day Summit that took place in Chicago. The Summit brought together teachers, administrators, and community leaders interested in solving a local problem and provided an opportunity and experts to help them develop action plans to solve those problems. The GYOC was lucky to be paired with “critical friend,” Ellen Sherratt, from the American Institute for Research, who assisted the collective in delving deeper into their issue and refining their work plan for the year ahead.

GYO IL was also represented by a team that included GYO candidate, Fawn Pochel, and GYO teacher, Felicia Peters. Their team focused on developing a contextualized curriculum in the field of land-based science education to help bridge the disconnectedness between Native urban youth and the natural world.
