GYO-IL Program Benefits

Our programs offer a comprehensive support system designed to help you not just pay for school but also thrive and stay in the teaching profession. Our program benefits include:

State-Funded Forgivable Loans

Receive up to $25,000 in tuition assistance, provided as a forgivable loan.* This financial support helps ease the burden of educational expenses, allowing you to focus on your passion for teaching.

*Candidates are eligible for loans after applying for grants-in-aid or other program resources. The actual amount received each semester depends on state appropriations to GYO Illinois and the specific allotment to each program. Loans are forgiven after candidates graduate from their GYO-IL program and teach in a hard-to-staff school or hard-to-staff position in Illinois for five years.

Wraparound Services

We understand that success is about more than tuition support. GYO programs provide additional resources, such as:

  • Textbooks and supplies

  • Student-teacher stipends

  • Childcare assistance

  • Laptop loans

  • Transportation support

These wraparound supports depend on GYO-IL raising additional funds through grants and donations, demonstrating our commitment to your well-being both inside and outside the classroom.

Comprehensive Support

Each GYO-IL program has dedicated staff to monitor your progress, assist with academic planning, and provide personalized support. They're here to help you navigate registration, financial aid, and campus resources, as well as tackle any challenges that come your way.

Peers and Community

GYO-IL programs foster dynamic cohorts of peers through monthly meetings and professional development opportunities that address social, racial, and economic challenges impacting educators in hard-to-staff schools. This support network helps build resilience, fosters solidarity, and lays a strong foundation for your future success as a community-connected classroom teacher.

360º Teacher Advocacy

We advocate on your behalf and sharpen your tools to advocate for yourself to ensure you have the necessary resources and support to thrive in higher education and your teaching career.
